Tyler Pipe comes in 3rd at 26th Annual Literacy Council of Tyler Spelling Bee
September 7, 2017
For the third year in a row, Tyler Pipe’s Gwen Jackson and Heath Huffstetter partnered up to participate in the annual Spelling Bee sponsored by the Literary Council of Tyler. The Literacy Council is a non-profit organization that provides a multitude of services in Tyler, Texas and Smith County. Their primary focus is to eliminate illiteracy in the local community by offering classes geared to teach folks how to read, but they also assist community members that are pursuing their GED and provide English as a second language classes.
Gwen and Heath battled their way through six rounds of challenging words and made it to the semi-finals with only three companies left. The mighty Tyler Pipe Spellers finally went out on the word spanspek – noun, a small round melon with a ridge scaly rind and aromatic orange flesh. Gwen and Heath did an amazing job and were cheered on by the Tyler Pipe Dream Team cheerleaders including Gloria Tuck, Greg Buckner, Jennie Shephard, Penny Carman, Melody Hawkins, Kim Hale and Sandra Smith.
Congratulations to Gwen and Heath. Time to get busy preparing for next year’s competition!
